Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place blackberries in a mixing bowl and toss with 1/2 cup sugar. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Stir in the milk until just combined.
  5. Pour melted butter into a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  6. Pour batter over the butter, but do not stir.
  7. Spoon the blackberry mixture evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
  9. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
