Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Orange Cheesecake Layer

  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of one large orange
  • 1/4 cup orange juice

Frosting

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup whipping cream

Instructions

Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water until well blended.
  5. Pour batter into pans and bake 30-35 minutes. Cool completely.

Orange Cheesecake Layer

  1. Reduce oven to 300°F. Line a 9-inch springform pan with parchment paper.
  2. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
  3. Add eggs, vanilla, orange zest, and juice. Beat just until combined.
  4. Pour into pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. Cool, then refrigerate.

Assembly and Frosting

  1. Melt chocolate chips and whipping cream together until smooth. Cool to spreading consistency.
  2. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Top with cheesecake layer, then second cake layer.
  3. Frost top and sides with chocolate ganache. Chill before serving.
