Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 handful fresh basil leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in the garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomatoes with their juice, crushing them with your hands or a spoon.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes if using.
  6. Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Stir in the chopped basil before serving.
