Ingredients

  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted bacon drippings
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 pounds hot dogs
  • Wooden sticks

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large heavy pot to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in melted bacon drippings, egg, and buttermilk until smooth.
  4. Pat hot dogs dry and insert wooden sticks into the ends.
  5. Dip each hot dog into the batter, coating evenly.
  6. Carefully lower into hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Drain on paper towels before serving.
