Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add yogurt, oil, and egg. Pour in the yeast mixture.
  3. Mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, then flatten into an oval (about 1/4-inch thick).
  6. Heat a skillet over medium-high. Cook each naan (no oil needed), about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden bubbles form.
  7. Brush warm naan with melted butter. Sprinkle with parsley or cilantro, if desired. Serve warm.
