Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tbsp water
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt and sugar, then gradually mix in flour until dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each into a rope and shape into pretzels.
  7. In a pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Boil pretzels one by one for 30 seconds each.
  8. Place boiled pretzels on baking sheets, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.
