Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt, sugar, and flour. Mix and knead until dough is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
  3. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 20-inch rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
