Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, honey, and egg until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a thick batter forms.
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Using a small scoop or spoon, drop the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Remove the poppers from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  7. Serve warm with additional honey butter for dipping.
